Bassing Beach

The first and most prominent of the CCT properties, Bassing Beach encompasses all the beach and high ground on the northwest end of the island (including the two cottages) from the westernmost point to a north-south line about 1,000 feet east of the breakwater and bounded on the south by Bailey Creek and a tidal ditch called ‘Four Score Ditch’; open to the public for passive recreation

Preserving the Cohasset Landscape since 1967

In the late 1960’s a group of concerned Cohasset residents banded together to save Bassing Beach from imminent development. Their fund-raising efforts, combined with a donation of some of the land, enabled this special place to be permanently protected for conservation and public recreation.

The Cohasset Conservation Trust grew from this initiative. The Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the natural environment of Cohasset and surrounding towns.

The CCT's mission is the protection of areas of special ecological importance, such as marshes, woodlands, and seashores; the promotion of public interest in conservation and smart development; and the preservation of properties of unique historic interest or unusual beauty.

As more open space disappears each year, the work of the Cohasset Conservation Trust has never been more timely or more important.

The Trust and Local Government

The Trust has a good working relationship with Cohasset's Conservation Commission, Community Preservation Commission, and other agencies of Town Government such as the Selectmen, Advisory Board, Planning Board and Water Commission.

As a private organization, the Trust is more flexible than Town agencies which require Town Meeting approval for the use of Town funds to acquire land.
